The Ensign Ewart is situated at the top of THE LAWNMARKET in Edinburgh's OLD TOWN.Thus it is the nearest pub to Edinburgh Castle, which makes it an ideal stop if you are visiting the castle, either before or after, or both! It is also the highest pub in the city centre. This is great, because after a hard night in the pub, going home is all "downhill".
As a result of its location it is a very popular stopping off point for visitors to the Castle. Many famous and not so famous people have visited here over the centuries. (Visitors include the President of Azerbaijan and his security team, who stopped in for a dinner and a pint!)

The pub concentrates on selling a range of good quality cask conditioned "real ales". There are three "regular" beers, as well as a "guest" beer. The beer is hand pumped up from the cellar.
Our favourite is The Caledonian Brewery's award winning "DEUCHAR'S I.P.A.
You should also try Caledonian's 80 -/- , or Orkney Dark Island. If you want to know more about these beers, then click on the “Drink” page. For those people with no taste, there are a couple of fizzy, tasteless keg beers and a lager, but we will not waste time talking about them.

The pub has a large selection of Malt Whisky, including Highland, Lowland, Island and Speyside whiskies. If you want to know more about some of the whiskies, then visit the “Drink” page. However, we can thoroughly recommend that you try the Macallan 10 Year Old!(As well as the regular 10 Year Old, the pub also has cask strength Macallan!!) In total there are over 40 malt whiskies and, surprise surprise, we have tried all of them.

The pub was one of the first in Edinburgh to have regular live folk music, and this tradition carries on today. There is LIVE FOLK MUSIC in the pub on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. In addition there is often music on Tuesday and Thursday nights too!
