Beers

The Ensign Ewart has a wide range of beers to suit all tastes. However we recommend that you try our cask conditioned beers.

Now there may be some of you out there who are not sure as to what cask beer is. You might be from Mars, or the U.S.A. or even Glasgow! So it might be in  order to give you a quick lesson in what cask beer is. If you want to know more, please click here for a quick lesson?

The Caledonian Brewery, known locally as the "Caley", provides us with our most quaffable beer, the best of which is:-

Deuchars I. P. A. ABV  3.8 %

Deuchars is a pale beer, which is slightly bitter and very refreshing. It is a very easy beer to drink and is a real session beer (that means you can drink more of it before you fall over). It has won numerous awards over the past few  years. We love it!

The Caledonian Brewery Website says:

Nose - distinctive peppery Goldings aroma with citric fruit notes.
Palate - quenching balance of malt and hops in mouth, lingering hoppy finish.
Comments - "superb session beer." - Roger Protz, The Real  Ale Almanac.

Caledonian 80/- ABV  4.1%

We don't tend to drink this one, unless we cannot get a pint of Deuchars. It is stronger, but still pleasant. We prefer a beer not quite as strong as this these days, but if you want a bit more kick than the IPA then this might be for  you. Beware, however, there are a few pubs in Edinburgh who claim to sell Caley  80/-, but in fact they sometimes substitute cheaper inferior beer! (They  rely on people being too drunk, or too stupid, to tell the difference!)

The Caledonian Website says about this beer:

Nose - rich aromas of malt and hops with citric fruit notes.
Palate - full malt in the mouth, deep, dry hoppy finish with hints of chocolate.
Comments - superbly balanced golden Heavy." - Roger  Protz, The Real Ale Almanac.

The Orkney Brewery

This brewery, funnily enough based in the Orkney Islands, produces several excellent beers such as Orkney Raven, Skullsplitter, and the very drinkable Dark Island. The Orkney Brewery sadly doesn't sell very much beer in Orkney. For some strange reason, the people up there seem to want to drink nasty fizzy dead keg beer! As a result almost all of the beer brewed there is exported to the mainland.

The beer most commonly found in Edinburgh pubs is the Dark Island. It is a strong beer both in taste and in alcohol content. As its name suggests it is a very dark beer and is slightly sweeter than the Caley beers,
